Gällivare’s greenhouse ecosystem by 2028 – from residuals to added value
A new study by Atacama, commissioned by Arctic Food Arena, has evaluated 36 ways to repurpose greenhouse residuals from four common crops; cucumber, lettuce, tomato, and bell pepper – in greenhouse systems for cold climate . 13 high-fit applications were selected based on environmental impact, technical maturity, and economic potential in Gällivare.

These include:
-
Toners & facial masks
-
Bioplastics
-
Fermented food & powders
-
Insect and snail farming
-
Biogas and biochar

The study demonstrates how a circular greenhouse model can turn waste into valuable products – supporting local food systems, sustainable materials, and renewable energy.
It also opens new questions around reindeer feed, herbs, and circular packaging solutions.
